Zipporah - Web Size Download

Zipporah, meaning “little bird,” was a courageous Midianite woman. She married Moses and her home became his for 40 years with her family. When God called Moses to return to Egypt, a strange series of events occurred. God came to Moses and sought to kill him, and Zipporah intervened, taking a sharp piece of flint and circumcising their son. She cast the boy's foreskin down before Moses, and the Lord spared Moses' life. Zipporah proclaimed to Moses, "You are my bridegroom because of bloodshed." She saved her husband's life by the bloodshed of her own child. (Exodus 4:24-26)

Zipporah understood the value of the covenant of circumcision and did some quick thinking to do what was necessary to make things right between Moses and God. Even in her disgust at having to circumcise her son, her gutsy boldness saved the life of her husband, and made things right again.
