As I built layer upon layer of color and pattern on this canvas, I often thought, it’s too much, feeling the need to tone it down. I covered parts of the bold color, creating what seemed more “safe” and “tame.” The result is a vibrant background partially hidden from view, stitched in with thread and held at bay. It reminds me of the ways I’ve felt the need to present a composed exterior—afraid to disrupt, afraid of friction—and how, in doing so, my full, authentic self isn’t always seen or known.
