Miriam was the older sister of Aaron and Moses and a leader of Israel. She was the first woman in the Bible to be named a prophet.

She helped save her brother Moses from being killed after Pharaoh decreed that all firstborn Hebrew boys be killed. (Exodus 2:4-9)

After Moses led the Israelites out of slavery and God parted the Red Sea, Miriam led the Israelite women in a victory song and dance celebrating God's rescue of her people from the Egyptian army. (Exodus 15:20-21)

Miriam died and was buried at Kadesh, meaning “holy,” a place that would later become a city of refuge for the Israelites. Jewish Midrash speaks of a legend of Miriam’s well. The story goes that, during the 40 years of wandering in the desert, a well followed Miriam, providing the Israelites with water. When Miriam died at Kadesh, the well dried up, leading to the miracle Moses performed, striking the rock to get water. (Numbers 20:1-13)
