Hannah, whose name means “favor” or “grace,” was a woman of great faith who was married to Elkanah. Hannah was unable to have a child, which caused her incredible grief and misery. Elkanah had another wife, named Peninnah, but his love for Hannah was greater. Because of this, Peninnah was spiteful and jealous of Hannah. She mocked Hannah because of her infertility, making her miserable. Hannah endured this for many years.

After crying out to God for a long time, Hannah able to become pregnant with a child. She gave birth to Samuel. She was so thankful for the blessing of her son and, keeping her word to God, she took him to the temple when he was weaned and dedicated Samuel to a life of service to God. Overjoyed at the miracle of her son, Hannah spoke a beautiful prayer, celebrating the strength and victory and honor of God to those who are faithful to him. (1 Samuel 1-2)
