Hagar was the Egyptian slave of Sarai. After being unable to conceive a child, Sarai gave Hagar to Abram to be his wife so that Abram could have a child. When Hagar became pregnant, Sarai became very jealous and treated her badly.

After a series of tragic circumstances, God provided and gave a message to Hagar through an angel. Hagar received a word of promise and provision from the Lord, and she was the first person in scripture to name God…EL ROI, the God who sees me. (Genesis 16,21)
