Junia - Web Size Download

Junia was an apostle who, alongside Andronicus, was spoken of highly by Paul in his letter of greeting to the church in Rome. Paul speaks of this pair warmly as his relatives or fellow Jews, fellow prisoners, and prominent among the apostles. We don’t know if Junia and Androcinus were a couple, siblings, or friends, but we do know that they were a meaningful part of Paul’s life and journey.

Junia was a minister of Christ in Rome before Paul’s conversion. She stayed with Paul when he was imprisoned at the start of his ministry. It took great courage and strength to stand up to follow Christ and be persecuted for her faith.

Through early Church history, Junia was widely accepted as a female apostle. However, her name was changed in some translations to a male version, Junias, due to the belief that a woman could not have been an apostle. Modern and ancient scholars alike have determined that the original name, Junia, is a woman, and this correction has been made to most current Bible texts. Some translations still remain that name Junia as Junias, a male.
