Sophia

Lady Wisdom, or Sophia in Greek, is the feminine depiction of wisdom and virtue in the book of Proverbs. This book is a collection of writings that give instructions on living wisely and fearing God.

Lady Wisdom is upheld as an ideal standard and is compared with the foolish woman. Many passages in the first nine chapters of Proverbs describe Lady Wisdom’s public and bold voice.

She raises her voice and shouts in the streets (1:20).

She takes a stand at the gate of the city (8:3). She calls out from the highest point of the city (9:3). She warns against Lady Folly (9:13). She offers her counsel and sound wisdom (8:14). She guards and protects those who love her (4:6).

There are endless benefits if we cling to wisdom. Proverbs 3:13-18 commends the person who finds wisdom: ”...she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold.

She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her.

Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who embrace her; those who lay hold of her will be blessed.”
