Martha

Martha was a woman of great faith and a dear friend of Jesus. She and her sister Mary and brother Lazarus were from a town called Bethany (meaning "house of figs").

When her brother Lazarus died from great illness, Jesus arrived four days later. Martha grieved that Jesus hadn’t come sooner and done something to help her brother. She knew and proclaimed that Jesus was the Messiah and could do whatever he willed. Jesus commanded her brother to rise up, and he did!

At another time, When Jesus came through Bethany to visit Martha’s home, she and her sister Mary welcomed Him. Martha is perhaps most famous for her busyness while Mary sat at the feet of Jesus. After much hard work and preparation for their guest, Martha asked Jesus, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” Jesus’ response was a reminder that to be present with him was more important than tasks. (Luke 10, John 11)
